First day in Yuma

Sunday morning, we headed to Cracker Barrel Restaurant. We discovered them while traveling outside of the NW.  The closest one to us is in Boise, ID, a little too far to drive for dinner. After breakfast, we went for the tour of the Yuma Territorial Prison and on to the Lettuce Festival. Later in the afternoon, we visited with our lot neighbors from Canada and Seattle.

Lettuce Festival Entrance

We didn't talk to this driver so I'm guessing this weeds.
Gas is so cheap!

Field Irrigation near the Lettuce Festival at the University of Arizona Agricultural Experimental Farm

Amazing carving skills!

Several tractors were hooked up with their equipment to plant and manage the fields.  I think this one cultivated and thinned the plants. We talked to a field worker who explained how the attachment planted the lettuce seed which is coated with a clay substance so that the wind doesn't blow it away and the birds
don't like it.  The seed actually lays on the ground which is then watered till the seed sprouts.

The U Pick garden. Lettuce, beans, broccoli, cabbage, carrots and more. The Dole Company exhibit gave away leaf lettuce so I scored.

This woman is explaining how the University uses drones to help them manage the  crops.  They can estimate a crop's potential by flying over and photographing the plants.  The photos are strung together and enlarged to the point where the plants can be counted in a 50' line which then gives the planter the estimate. Much faster than marking out 50' and counting by
hand.

John Deere had a large presence.

Sonny walking into the Lettuce Festival. Another blue sky, dry day for the web footed people from the Northwest!

These 3 performed a short skit on the lawn at the Territorial Prison.  The girls won at Bingo but were robbed. The Sherriff is trying to solve the case but it turned out the Sherriff and the Mayor were in cahoots and were splitting the money. The girls shot the Sherriff and the Mayor got away with the money.

Inmates formed their own band,

Quite a joke!  There were 6 men to a 9'x12' cell with triple bunks, no windows  and a pot.  The library was well used.

Inmate's housing.

There were 29 women housed at the  prison over time.  They had a separate area for their housing but not much better than the men.

This was the mirror that incoming inmates sat at for the frontal and profile photo.

Looking out to the Colorado River from the prison tower.
